In this country house reception hall our client wondered how to incorporate a large open log fire within the confines of a slim chimney breast. We could have selected a small fireplace to fit the breast but this would not have had the desired impact in such a large room. We looked at extending the chimney breast but this would have caused a problem with the ornate cornice on the ceiling. The solution in this case was to oversize the fireplace and have it wrap round the chimney breast.
Our client chose a fireplace design from a magazine and we custom made a replica in limestone. The fireplace had to look original so we treated the stone with acid to give it an aged look. A cast iron solid fuel hob grate and honed slate hearth completed the design.
